Meet Hachumak
My name is Jorge Hachumak. I was born and raised in Peru and, I am a practitioner of natural medicine. I prefer to use the expression Medicine Man instead of “Shaman” because it is closer to the traditions of my country and does not have the connotations of an ethnical priesthood.
Why Amazon Hope Project Exists
The Amazon Hope Project is a not-for-profit, charitable corporation chartered to preserve, educate, and research the unique wisdom and ecosystems of Peru and the Peruvian Amazon Jungle. As the local populace becomes more integrated into modern day society, many of the young people no longer desire to live the life of their ancestors nor pursue the knowledge that generations before them have held. To ensure that the knowledge, wisdom, cosmology, and technologies are preserved and taught, Amazon Hope Project was created.
Some of the initial projects include the creation of a fishpond as a means to provide a sustainable source of food for the local population as well as the creation of an animal sanctuary to rehabilitate and reintroduce rescued animals back into their natural habitats.
Traditional Knowledge
Amazon Hope Project will systematically research, catalog, and preserve traditional plant knowledge including native medicinal plants, cosmology, traditional technologies, and non-physical patrimony.
We will also engage in replanting of these native plants to ensure their availability for future generations.
Native Plants
A key focus is on the identification and cultivation of native plants that are of economical and medicinal importance to both the local populace and their animals before this ancient wisdom and knowledge is lost.
Veterinarian Services
The native animal populations are declining through loss of habitat and over hunting. By offering protection and veterinarian services for animals rescued from illegal trafficking as well as from non-sustainable hunting practices, Amazon Hope Project will work to offset the current decline through new methods and techniques.
Research
To preserve the rich diversity of the Amazonian native landscape, continued research is critical. Studying local flora and fauna in their respective natural environments will expand current understandings on (but not limited to) reproduction, protection, nutrition, and reintroduction methods into nature for various species found in the region.
Protection
Support is greatly needed for the local population in their struggle for documenting ownership and titling of their ancestral and family owned land. Having an expanded understanding of how to protect the rainforest environment by and through supporting efforts of communal and privately protected areas will allow the local population to maintain their traditions, heritage, and culture.
Education
The Amazon Hope Project desires to develop and offer educational programs with respect to the present way of life in the Amazon and its challenges. With that goal in mind, through knowledge and understanding, we will support local activities around environmental clean-up and restoration of the local ecosystems. Sustainable methods for food production and environmental impact will be taught.
How Amazon Hope Project will make a difference in our world
Preserve
The Peruvian Amazon Jungle, and Peru in general, is rich in old wisdom, practices, and traditions. As this knowledge is restored and practiced more broadly, approaches to today's health and well-being issues can be adapted to reflect and incorporate this old wisdom.
Protect
The local population will receive guidance and support for the documentation of ownership and titling of their ancestral and family owned land. Efforts to establish communal and privately protected areas will allow the local population to maintain their traditions, heritage, and culture.
Saving our Animals and Plants
Protection and rescue services for animals, including veterinarian services, as well as supporting the ending of endangered animal hunting and fishing practices as needed. Identification and cultivation of native plants that have medicinal purposes based upon traditional knowledge will be documented and used for the well-being of all.
